100 Mile Fitness Challenge Introduction/Sign Up

Hi, I'm Trish. I'm a 28 year old gal from Dallas, Texas, and I need some motivation working out.

For the past nine months I have been participating in various workout challenges through work. It’s always more fun to work out when others are working out with you (even if just in a virtual sense). My last challenge ended September 30th and now I’m proposing that YOU join the 100 mile challenge with me.

Here’s how it works:
In order to complete this Challenge, you will need to “travel” 100 miles from October 1st through December 31st.

Here's how you calculate your mileage:
*Running or walking 1 mile outside or on a treadmill equals 1 mile.

*15 minutes of other workouts equals 1 mile (elliptical, swimming, weight lifting, workout video, workout classes, etc.).

A few "workout" stipulations:
“Workouts” only include activities specifically done for the purpose of exercise. Shopping, house cleaning, walking to and from the parking lot, and other day to day activities should not be included.

Partial miles travelled on different days cannot be combined. For example, if you run 1.25 miles on one day, and .75 mile on another day, that does not equal 2 miles. It counts as 1 mile.

Minutes accumulated on two different days cannot be combined. For example, if you workout 10 minutes one day and 5 minutes the next day, that does not combine to equal a mile.

1 mile on the bike does not equal 1 mile, etc. Only walking/running is mile for mile. Otherwise it would be too easy, huh?

Hey Trish!
It’s the 2nd of October! I know. This was an incredibly spontaneous idea. Deal. Work out extra this weekend. :)

Hey Trish!
I just found your challenge and it’s already November, but I still want to join! Well, then join! Talk to me about how you can prorate your 100 miles.

Hey Trish!
How do I keep track of all my miles? You’ll have to do that on your own, but I make a 100 box grid in Excel and buy really cute stickers to mark each mile. Email me if you’d like me to send you my spreadsheet. I love sharing!

Hey Trish!
Why can't partial miles or minutes be counted? Well, among other [maybe better] reasons, when rules start bending then there's no stopping them from breaking. You'll thank me in the end. Maybe.

Sign Up Below--No Wallflowers Allowed! (You do not need a blog to participate--just put this blog's URL the URL field if you don't have a blog):

Wanna Help Motivate?
If you are interested in being a contributor to this blog--maybe workout tips, recipes, or other ideas, please let me know in the comments below. Like I said, this is totally spur of the moment, so I'm still thinking of ways to help you get motivated to move it move it!

A few disclaimers:
1. I did not make up this challenge, and I don’t know where it originated from. I’m not a genius, and I do have to give credit to my coworkers for smoothing out the details.
2. I do not guarantee that you will lose weight or win your marathon if you do this challenge.
3. As with any new exercise program, check with your doctor to make sure it's okay you participate.
4. I do hope you’ll have fun and maybe get/provide some moral support by participating.

**Big Thanks to Softdrink (Jill) for making us a button!

I'll contribute, just tell me how. I signed up, making my coworker and Mike do it too. It'll be fun! All that indoor exercise in the dead of winter...

Okay, so I'm looking for a kick in the butt to get me walking but let's be real here. I've got this awful cold bug so I'm not starting until Monday at the earliest.

So, Trish, do we stop in here and do a weekly round up on Fridays?

Jeanette said...

Oh, I'd love you join you but no exercising for me until 6 weeks after I had the baby so that puts me at the end of October before I could join.
Have fun though! :-)

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

Lisa--just sent you an author request. Never done that before, so not sure how it works!

CJ--I'm here to give you your kick in the butt! :) Honestly I haven't figured out how everything will work yet, but yes, probably do a weekly round-up. Do you have any suggestions? Do you want me to keep a tally in the sidebar with your miles? I can do that if you want...?

Jeanette--But you have a lovely baby! If you want to start November 1st, come back--you can do 60 miles. :)

Kristi said...

I would love to join but I don't have a URL. It isn't letting me add without it. I'll just pretend like my name is there and I'll still do the challenge. Thanks for the push to start exercising more.

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

Hey Kristi! Thanks for joining the challenge--and for bringing the linky problem to my attention. I just put this blog's url in for you since you don't have your own. Seems it used to let you leave it blank! Hmmm...

Fun! This is just the motivation I need to get back into yoga! And I might be borrowing my mom's awesome bike for some bike rides. (I'm super-jealous of people who can bike around their town, but I live too far away from anything to do that.)

Amanda said...

Hey Trish - I signed up with my personal blog instead of the book blog, and I'll probably write about it later tonight or tomorrow. I'd love to help in any way I can. I really need the motivation to do this!

raidergirl3 said...

man oh man, I need to get motivated.

raidergirl3 said...

PS: I mile = 1.6 km for Canadians.

Anonymous said...

I've been walking, but I need to kick it up a notch. :-D So this will be great motivation!

Let me know what I can do to help.

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*Eva - Ya, wish I could go bike riding too--but no bike for me. Just the one at the gym, but then I can read at the same time. ;)

*Amanda - I'll send you a request to be an author on the blog, but no pressure.

*Raidergirl3 - OK, if my math is correct then you'll need 160 km? So, what if instead of 15 minutes = 1 mile you did 10 minutes = 1 km? It's early in the morning, so let me know if my math is totally whack. My head hurts. :)

*Softdrink - I'll send you an author request. I'm still taking this day by day, but hopefully I'll figure out a plan soon.

Lisa said...

Look at all of us people wanting to walk 100 miles!

But I would walk 100 miles
and I would walk 100 more
just to be the girl who
walked ...

ok it's too early, my brain won't do it. Jill wanna make up some lyrics for me?

raidergirl3 said...

Trish - I'll still walk 100 miles, and use 15 minutes to equal one mile. I'll just have to walk 1.6 km to count 1 mile.
100 miles sounds less than 160 km!

Kate said...

Trish:
You motivate us to read, and now you motivate us to exercise! Can you do a challenge for scrapbooking? Seriously!! In the meantime, I'll run :-) Love you--Mom

Lisa - Hah! I've had that same song running through my head this morning!

Lisa said...

Well get on it! We need a theme song.

elise said...

i'm in. & i'll blog about it. love it.

I am in. Can't wait to get started. I love walking. I can help with diet tips as I have been on Weight watchers since Christmas and reached my goal in August.

Brittanie said...

I recently changed jobs within the company this summer from one that had me really moving to one where I sit down a lot. I need motivation to get up on my own outside of work and move. lol I wish I could read while I walk but I am so uncoordinated and I hate audio books. I am interested to see how far I make it at a challenge other than reading. Thank you for hosting. :)

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*Raidergirl - LOL--I guess that would be easier than converting everything.

*Mom - You rock!!! And no, I won't do a challenge for scrapbooking. Maybe you should! :)

*Lisa and Jill - Why don't you guys get on a theme song for us. Duel vlog with dancing, too. :)

*Elise - Yay! I hoped you'd do this with me again.

*Vivienne - Thanks for signing up! And congrats on your WW goal. I'll send you an author request and if you have any post ideas let me know.

*Brittanie - So glad you're joining us! I sometimes hop on the stationary bike and read while doing that but can't walk and read at the same time either.

serendipity_viv said...

Trish, I have some fabulous non fat recipes that are very good at keeping you full. I could always post a weekly recipe on a certain for you, if you would like. They are really easy recipes too, as I am not a great cook.

Lisa said...

I am not Trish, but I love that idea!

Martha Eskuchen said...

Hi Trish - This sounds like a great idea and good motivation for me! I'll post the badge and an announcement at my blog! So I guess I'll have to figure my walk for 2 miles so I get full credit instead of 1.5!
Will we be doing some progress updates?

Anonymous said...

I made a mistake when I first signed up and it listed a book that I had read. Can you delete number 19 and keep my number 20 sign up.

I'm really looking forward to this challenge. I need to get in better shape and one of my dogs needs to drop a few pounds.

Anonymous said...

I'm just wondering, I do most of my walking on the beach or in the forest and I have no idea how to measure the miles... I usually use a pedometer. Does anyone have any clue about how many steps make up one mile?

Anonymous said...

Apologies, I just looked it up, it's 2000 steps to one mile on average in case anyone's wondering. That'll have to do.

Brooke Morris said...

Okay, I suppose that I will join. This was supposed to be my off month, but I will change it to another month. I have some healthy receipts that are easy to make as well that you can post. I get great receipes from Muscle and Fitness. Let me know if you need help. I can start a scrapbooking blog.

Anonymous said...

I am going to sign up. Gonna make a blog post right now and then come back and link my post to it.
E-mail me at lovestoread0708 at yahoo dot com I have some ideas!! :)

Talk to you later,
Trisha

I'm in. My goal is to be done before we come to Dallas and see you guys. I'm already at 9 miles! Ran 5 Saturday and did 1 hour on the elyptical on thursday.

Anonymous said...

I could do some healthy eating tips. I went on Weight Watchers last year about this time and lost 34 pounds between October 9 and January 9. I have helped a few of my friends with eating habits and wouldnt mind sharing some of my favorite foods I have discovered as well as ways to get motivated to work out.

Anonymous said...

I'm so excited! I need to play catch up!! But this is just the motivation I need =) Thanks Trish!

Sandy Nawrot said...

I don't know whether to hug you or curse you. But thanks to Beth Fish, I'm here. I have no idea whether I can realistically do this...I have not crunched the numbers. But what the hey. I'm a walker, compliments of my audio books. I was initially thinking I was going to have to wear a pedometer for the next three months, so thank you. This is much easier in some ways.

Dawn @ sheIsTooFondOfBooks said...

OK, I'm in! You're absolutely right, there's something about a team effort that really motivates (and keeps us accountable)

I'm trying to figure out how to make a graph (for progress) from a google.doc. Will be back with an update if I get it working ...

Jill said...

Thanks for doing this. I was looking for something to motivate me to get to the gym!

Thanks so much.

This may be just what I need to get my butt out walking again! Great idea.

I am late signing up and I can't actually start till next Monday but if I have done my sums right I can still make 100 miles!

Hoping this will help lost the baby weight :) Thanks for the motivation!

I'm in! I'm in! Thanks, Trish, for hosting this. We'll all be so healthy and fit by Dec, and greet 2010 with great aplomb!

I've just started working out again after a couple of very slothful months. This challenge sounds like an excellent way to keep my motivation high! Please count me in.

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*Julie - Thanks for signing up!

*Ginger Patches - Hopefully we can all motivate each other to get our butts moving. :)

*Alexa - 100 miles is approximately 25 hours (using the 15 minute rule), so you should have no problem catching up!

*Alice Teh - LOL! Yes, I'm hoping that starting this challenge now will help New Year Resolutions be a little easier to keep.

*Kate S - Thanks for joining--I'm hoping the group effort will help keep everyone motivated.

This is going to be a big challenge for me. It may take me awhile to work up to walking a mile, but I'm going for it!

Laura said...

Look what you made me do! Since we've already been doing workout challenges for the first 9 months of the year...why not finish the year with a challenge! :)

Robin said...

This will be great motivation for me to get back to my walking! Thanks!

Kim said...

I already go to the gym 5 X a week, but never keep track of miles. So, this will be fun. My workout friend's husband has a goal to "run" to Idaho (from Las Vegas) by the end of the year.

Excellent challenge -- thanks!

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*Booklogged - You'll be able to do a mile in no time--thanks for joining!

*Laura - Insert evil laugh here. :) I'm glad you're doing this with me--more fun that working out alone, huh?

*Robin - Thanks for joining the challenge!

*Kim - Woohoo! This sound be a pretty easy challenge for you, but I'm glad you joined us!

Mare/TommyGirl said...

i went ahead and signed up as I started working out with walks two weeks ago and I'm hoping this challenge will keep me going.

Just let me know what you need me to do - and thanks for running this.

Anonymous said...

3 days a week I commute to work and instead of taking the bus to and from the train station I ride my bike = 4 x 15 minutes. Does that count? Since it *is* a decision to travel this way...

I absolutely don't want to bend the rules, I am just really wondering about this!

TNX! And keep up the good work ;)

(Diane) bookchickdi said...

This is a great challenge! I joined the gym across the street and am up to walking four miles on the treadmill, 3 to 4 times a week. It will be good to keep track of my progress and join with others.

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*TommyGirl - Thanks for signing up! Every Friday we'll report miles, so come back then.

*gnoegnoe - I sent you an email--hope you don't mind. :)

*Diane - Wonderful!! Glad you'll be joining us. :)

I logged my first mile this morning. :-) I'm going to try like hell to do this!

Hollie said...

My friend Julie, one of the commenters above, (Hi Julie!) told me about this 100 mile challenge, I googled it and wow, lot's of challenges out there, glad I found the right place! I haven't blogged since 2008 (not much of a writer), in fact, I think I only have one posting to my blog. I really should try to write something everyday. But with so much going on, time often just slips away from me. Anyhoo, hoping this challenge will help me to up my walking mileage. Maybe it will somehow boost my writing abilities too, maybe not, but one can hope. :)

I know I'm late, but I'm anxious to get started and see if I can make it to 100 anyway.

CJ said...

Saw your button on Ginger Patches' blog and had to come see. I've been dressed for exercise all day but haven't gotten on the treadmill.
74 days left in the year. I can DO this! I CAN do this. I can do THIS!
I am in!
Going to go RIGHT now and walk - probably two miles to get started.
THANKS for the challenge.

Karen said...

I found your site from another blog and I'm so excited to sign up! I just re-started exercising yesterday so this will great. I listen to audio books while walking and watch TV shows or movies while on my elliptical. I'm only allowed to listen/watch while working out, so it's a great motivator. I want to find out what happens next, so I get exercising! Thanks for the push to get going again.

mamajuliana said...

A blogfriend sent me an email about your challenge! I'm in!

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*Brainella - Yay! Thanks for joining!

*Hollie - Welcome to the challenge. :) Even just a little bit every day helps.

*WLTM - I think at this point 100 miles is still really manageable! Good luck!

*CJ - YOU CAN DO THIS! LOL--thanks for joining. :)

*Karen - Wow--great idea about only being able to watch TV while you work out! I think I might adopt that.

*Mamajuliana - So glad you're in! Have fun!

Everyone--don't forget to report your miles every Friday.

*Monica - Thanks for joining us!!

Terra said...

I may be a month late to start but I am so doing this. I think that it is a wonderful idea.

Now just let me go bookmark a kilometres to miles converter... o_O

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

*Terra - Welcome! if you want to go with 66 miles that would prorate you in line with the rest of the group. If you want to go for the full 100--I think it's doable!! :)

In terms of kilometers and miles, 1.6 km = 1 mile. I believe. :P

Angie Allen said...

Thanks for doing this; it is just the accountability I need, especially with the holidays coming up. I tend to get derailed then. I'd like to know how to prorate my miles, or I can go back through my exercise journal and give real miles from the first few weeks. Thanks!

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

Hi Angie--I tried to find an email address for you but didn't see one on your blogs. You can email me at trishsreadingnook at gmail dot com if you want to talk more about this.

In terms of prorating miles, if you started November 1 then you'd shoot for 66 miles and November 15th would be 50 miles, so something inbetween there. :) 55?? I make it up as I go along. LOL! Let me know if you have any questions.

Shanda McKeehan said...

I just found this blog and am so excited! I'm really late in signing up but am going to try to get it in. Just what I needed for my current workout burnout! Are you going to do another one when this one is done?

Unknown said...

Trish, Do I start now or can I count any exercise I did prior to Nov. 21, 2009? I have been tracking it on the Presidential Challenge board among others.

Trish @ Love, Laughter, Insanity said...

Shanda - As of right now I am planning on going for another 3 months but I don't know if I'll continue throughout the year. Glad you're joining us and email me if you have questions.

Sabe - you can count exercise that you did prior to Nov 21--just not before October 1st! :) Thanks for joining!!

Kate said...

Hi Trish,

I've got 135 miles as of Friday the 4th. I'm shooting for 200 by the end of December. I'll need every one of those miles considering all the yummies we made at our bake day on Saturday. We run so we can eat the yummies, right? -- Love you, Mom

Mare/TommyGirl said...

I'm in for another round and I promise to better with providing my miles each week.

Also, I know you mentioned this to me before, but if you want me to, I'd love to do a post for those like me who do the exercise because it's a good habit or necessary (like getting up and going to work), not because I actually *enjoy* doing it.
