Oh, the exercises you'll do...

Hello everyone! I wanted to extend my own welcome in addition to Jill's from the other day. I'm looking forward to doing this challenge with you all. :)

This first week, let me ask you: what do you like to do for exercise? Though the challenge is based on miles, it's not limited to walking and running. There are plenty of options out there! For instance:

  • Zumba
  • Yoga
  • Swimming
  • Hiking
  • Spinning
  • Biking
  • Elliptical
  • Weight Lifting
  • Rollerskating
  • Kickboxing

And so much more. There are so many different kinds of exercise out there that there's no need to ever get bored doing the same workout over and over. What types of exercise are your favorites? Give us all some good ideas of fun things to do for this challenge!

Well, this may sound kind of funny, but I really enjoy the weight lifting that I do. Funny for a 53-year-old woman? No, because after I'm through with it or even in the midst of it, I feel really good about myself and strong. I think one of the hardest things for women as they get older is all of a sudden realizing that they don't seem as strong as they used to be. Anyway, I try to spend about 20 or so minutes 3 times a week using some of the weight machines at our gym. My husband helped me with them and now I happily make my way from station to station, listening to tunes or podcasts or whatnot, and doing 2 sets of 15 on each machine. And each time will count for a mile! :-)

I just discovered this really cool class at the community center called Water Yoga. We do all the power poses that you would do in yoga, but the water helps you to hold the positions and maintain alignment without strain. You don't think you are doing too much, but when you get out and try it on dry land, you realize how much more flexible you are!

Walk. Walk, walk, walk, walk, walk. And maybe a yoga class here and there.

I'm a huge fan of variety. Right now, I'm enjoying hiking, walking, running, zumba, Wii Fit, elliptical, recumbent bike, weight lifting, resistence bands, and kickboxing. :D

I love to walk, but I do bike at the rec center because I can read at the same time and they have babysitting :)

Oh, drat. I just realized I can/should count my strength training for this challenge. Oh well, I guess I'm not cutting it quite so close as I thought! :D

*looks back at calendar to figure out how many miles to add to next week's check-in*

I just got a new bike as a graduation gift so I have been doing a lot of cycling (I cycle to and from work as often as I can!). I am also a huge fan of the eliptical -- I like to read while I chug along. And when I can, I love to do yoga. The classes offered at the climbing gym that my boyfriend is a member at are amazing! I'm hoping that in the near future I can join and go to those more regularly.

Earlier this year, I started swimming again once or twice a week. I love that it is less stressful on my bad knees than walking. Also, a year ago I walked my first 5K race. By signing up for a periodic 5K race, it helps motivate me to get my daily walking in. I would love to jog an entire 5K, but I'm not even close. It's a goal of mine that I hope to achieve in the next year.
